MicroNeedling – Collagen Induction Therapy
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a skin treatment using a fractional micro-needling device that is used to treat acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks, pore size, and general skin rejuvenation.
What is a SkinPen® Microneedling Treatment Like?
During a treatment, your skin is cleansed and then a strong topical numbing cream applied for 20-25 minutes. Your skin is then cleaned again and the SkinPen® is applied to the treatment areas. The device uses an automated stamp method very much like microscopically aerating your skin. It allows deeper absorption of topicals that are applied to your skin and stimulates your body’s own repair mechanisms that create more collagen.
Is There Downtime?
On the day of treatment, the treated area will be red and very mildly sore. You will look like you have a sunburn. The day post-treatment, you will be able to apply make-up as usual and will appear slightly pink. Some people have mild peeling of sloughed dead skin 3-4 days after the treatment.
What Skin Problems Can Be Treated With Microneedling?
The treatment was originally developed to treat scarring such as mild-moderate acne scars, some surgical scars, and stretch marks. However, it is now used effectively to treat enlarged pores and for general skin rejuvenation and pigmentation. It can be combined with other treatments such as microdermabrasion and with intense pulsed light therapy.
Is the Treatment Painful?
Yes, there is some discomfort with a microneedling treatment. The tiny needles are the size of acupuncture needles, but topical numbing is recommended. Most people then find that the treatment is very easy to have done and easy to recover from.
Is There Any Preparation or Aftercare for a SkinPen® Treatment?
There is nothing you need to do prior to treatment except be sure that any scar to be treated is closed and healing. After your treatment, you will need to continue good sunscreen use as usual. Other topicals may be recommended by your technician to treat a specific skin problem.
How Many Treatments are Needed?
The number of recommended treatments varies depending on the condition. For scarring, 6-8 treatment (2-4 weeks apart) are ideal. It takes more than one treatment to begin to notice the difference in your skin. For general skin improvement, 4-5 treatments are usually recommended (4 weeks apart).
Will Microneedling Improve the Appearance of Scars?
No. Microneedling is a highly effective treatment that minimizes scarring by stimulating collagen growth beneath the scar. Multiple treatments are required, but little downtime is needed. There are no current treatments that completely reduce scars.
How Long Does a Microneedling Take?
Although the actual treatment takes only a few minutes, we schedule you for a 1 hour appointment time so that you can comfortably numb the area prior to treatment and for a soothing topical can be applied afterward.
